LCPS BEAM provides a unique opportunity for middle school students from underrepresented communities to engage with advanced extracurricular mathematics, fostering confidence and a passion for the subject.
LCPS BEAM Summer Math Discovery is a program designed to inspire rising seventh and eighth graders from underrepresented communities to embrace advanced mathematics. The program focuses on improving students' math content knowledge, problem-solving skills, and confidence. Students engage in rich learning experiences, including two to four targeted math courses daily, such as Fractions, Rates & Ratios, Primes & Programming, and Cryptarithms. They also participate in 'Open Math Time' twice a day, where they can explore puzzles, work through challenging problem sets like the 100 Problem Challenge, or collaborate on strategy games. Beyond coursework, students develop resilience, persistence, communication, and flexible thinking, learning that the process of problem-solving is as important as the answer. The program aims to increase enrollment in advanced high school math courses like Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment.
Each day from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., students participate in two to four targeted math courses and have access to Open Math Time twice a day to explore puzzles, problem sets, or strategy games.
The program is ideal for rising seventh and eighth-grade middle school students from historically underrepresented communities who have completed Math 6 and are interested in exploring advanced mathematics and problem-solving.
